A little memory from our science table

We kept this version of magic milk soft and sunny, using pink, orange, and yellow like a warm rainbow. The children touched the surface with soapy cotton swabs, watched each little bloom spread, and returned to the same spots to see how the colors changed as they met.

How to do the experiment

Step 1

Pour the milk

Pour enough whole milk into a shallow tray or plate to cover the bottom.

Add the warm colors

Add small drops of pink, orange, and yellow food coloring around the milk, leaving room between the colors.

Dip a cotton swab in soap

Pour a little dish soap into a small dish, then dip the tip of a cotton swab into it.

Touch the milk

Gently touch the soapy cotton swab to one colored spot and watch the color move away from the soap.

Try another spot

Touch different areas of the tray. Pause between touches to notice which colors move and where they meet.

Why It Works

Milk contains fat and has surface tension. Dish soap bonds with the fat and changes that surface tension, making the milk move. The food coloring travels with the moving milk, so we can see the motion as colorful swirls and blooms.
