Sunset Milk Experiment — Watch it in action

A little memory from our science table

One evening after watching a beautiful sunset together, Sofia asked if we could "paint the sky." Instead of grabbing paintbrushes, we decided to see if we could recreate those warm oranges, pinks, reds, and yellows using one of our favorite science experiments. As soon as the soap touched the milk, the colors began dancing together like a real sunset stretching across the horizon. It quickly became one of those activities that was just as calming as it was exciting. We slowed down, watched carefully, and talked about all the different colors we could see in the evening sky. Sometimes the best STEM activities also become beautiful works of art.

How to do the experiment

Step 1

Pour the milk

Pour enough whole milk into a shallow plate to completely cover the bottom.

Step 2

Add warm colors

Add drops of yellow, orange, pink, and red food coloring around the plate. Encourage children to notice how the colors already resemble a sunset before the experiment even begins.

Step 3

Touch with soap

Dip a cotton swab into dish soap. Touch the center of the milk. Watch the warm colors begin swirling together just like the evening sky.

Step 4

Explore and observe

Experiment by touching different areas of the plate. Observe how each new touch creates unique swirling patterns. Ask children which colors remind them most of a real sunset.

Why It Works

Milk contains tiny fat molecules suspended throughout the liquid. Dish soap breaks apart those fat molecules. As the molecules move away from the soap, they carry the food coloring with them, creating beautiful swirling patterns. The experiment demonstrates chemistry while naturally introducing children to color theory and observation.
