Spot counting with ladybugs, one number at a time
A red-and-black tray, a pile of little black spots, and a set of numbered ladybugs. Children match the number of spots to the numeral, then wipe the tray and start again — the repetition is the point.

How to set up ladybug counting sensory play
Follow along at your own pace.
Step 1: Lay out the ladybugs
Put the numbered ladybugs in a row, lowest number first.
Step 2: Add the spots
Your child places the matching number of spots on each ladybug, counting out loud.
Step 3: Check together
Point and count each ladybug back together, touching every spot as you say the number.
Step 4: Mix it up
Shuffle the ladybugs, clear the spots and go again.

Numeral recognition, one-to-one correspondence and subitising small amounts.
