A picnic blanket, a basket and a scatter of little bugs who have come to share the sandwiches. Children sort them into groups first, then count each group — the two skills that sit underneath all early maths.

How to set up count & sort the picnic bugs
Follow along at your own pace.
Step 1: Set the picnic
Spread the blanket and scatter the bugs across it.
Step 2: Sort
Ask your child to put all the ants together, all the ladybugs together, and so on.
Step 3: Count
Count each group out loud, touching every bug.
Step 4: Label
Place the matching number card next to each group and compare which has most and fewest.
